Bolivia is a landlocked
country in central South America. It is bordered by Brazil,
Paraguay, Argentina, Chile and Peru.
Although located close to the equator, every
climate from alpine to
subtropical exists in Bolivia because
of the acute variations in altitude. Snowcapped peaks pierce
the clouds and reach over 20,000 feet above sea level, while
Bolivia's portion
of the Amazon basin is almost at sea level. In some
locations the Andes are so steep, that travelers
can pass through several climatic zones within a short period
of time.
Bolivia's indigenous people constitute the vast
majority of the population, with more than 80 percent of Bolivians
being of indigenous heritage. El Alto
de La Paz is the fastest growing city in Latin America and
the largest indigenous community in the world.
La Paz is the highest capital city
in the world at 3, 636 meters. Bolivia has a surface area
of 100,
000
km2
and a middle height of 3, 500 meters. |
